ALL-ABILITIES MUSIC (ages 5-10)

This small group class is a relaxed and fun music-making group designed for all participants, regardless of ability or learning style. Guided by our wonderful Lead Teaching Artist and Bonner Elementary Special Education Teacher, Anna Walter-Grussling, this class is appropriate for participants with sensory, cognitive,  developmental, and/or physical disabilities. You and your child with special needs are welcome to join this joyful and enriching class of singing, movement, and sound-making. Each child is invited to experience the class in their own way — this is a great opportunity to observe your child experiencing music! *This class is a low noise, moderate stimulation environment with no flashing lights.

VIOL CONSPIRACY INTENSIVE (intermediate level)
Teacher: Anna
Dates: Monday, June 19-Friday, June 23
Time: 2:00-4:00pm

Calling all intermediate-level violin and viola players! This week, we explore fun arrangements of pop tunes while diving into music theory, reading and understanding notation and rhythm markings, and learning how to play in an ensemble. This intensive is open to violin and viola players who have a basic understanding of note reading and at least one year of instrumental music. Fun is always the focus, but other benefits include independently playing in an ensemble, learning when to play a lead or supportive role, syncopated rhythms, holding a groove, and sight-reading music. There will be an informal performance on Friday to showcase our group talents. Class size limited to 12 participants.

SONGWRITING INTENSIVE (all instruments!)

This week is for finding your inner creator! We will focus on composing music -- from the first sound tidbits and ideas, through song formation, to the finished product. Crafted specifically for intermediate to advanced instrumentalists of all types, we will explore sound colors, musical ideas, and rhythmic structures that make a song sound a certain way or fit a certain genre. We will dive into lyric writing as an optional addition to your instrumental work and will play together and exchange ideas. There will be a day that we focus on sound manipulation and expansion through amplification and pedals. There will be an informal performance on Friday to showcase our group talents. Class size limited to 6 participants.

IMPROVISATION INTENSIVE (all instruments!)

Explore your instrument's sound potential, stretch boundaries of technique, open up new possibilities of music making! Learning to improvise is a musically universal tool for any musician. Open to intermediate to advanced instrumentalists (strings, winds, brass) who want to explore the creative side of music making. We will explore scales and modes from different parts of the world and various time periods. We will dive into rhythm as both the foundation and driver in a tune. We will make a lot of sound together! There will be an informal performance on Friday to showcase our group talents.

CHAMBER MUSIC INTENSIVE (advanced level)
SESSION 1: Monday, June 12-Friday, June 16
SESSION 2: Monday, June 26-Friday, June 30
SESSION 3: Monday, July 24-Friday, July 28
Time: 2hr block daily tbd, based on each group's availability
Cost: $180 per session


This class is open to advanced string players who want to play chamber music. String Quartets/Trios/Quintets/Cello Quartets/String Duets/etc. are encouraged to register together! If you don't currently have a group, we will help put one together for you. Participants will find a 2hr block of time each day to be coached by a local string expert for each session. Participants will work on various chamber music repertoire pieces, with time allotted for both individual and group coaching. There will be an informal performance on Friday to showcase your week's work together. Class size limited to 2-3 ensembles (depending on size and availability) per session.


STRING MAFIA (int/adv level)
Teacher: Jessica & Anna
Dates: Tuesdays, June 20-August 22 (9 classes, no class 7/4)
Time: 7:00-8:30pm
Cost: $252*


String players unite! We explore creative arrangements of pop tunes, old standards, classic hits, and anything else we feel like playing. There are parts for all string players (violin, viola, cello, bass) from intermediate to advanced levels. Fun is always the focus, but other benefits include independently playing your own part in an ensemble, learning when to play a lead or supportive role, playing syncopated rhythms, reading in other clefs (cello), using extended techniques, holding a good groove...AND you can never have enough string players as friends. Come rock your socks with us! There will be an end-of-summer performance, tba.


CELLO BRIGADE (intermediate level)

Dates: Tuesdays, June 20-August 22 (9 classes, no class 7/4)
Time: 6:00-7:00pm

Cello power! Back by popular demand, the Cello Brigade is for young learners who might not yet be ready for the faster pace of String Mafia. We explore simple and creative arrangements of pop tunes and classic hits made specifically for the players involved. Participation is for intermediate level players, ie. those who can read bass clef and have explored 1-4 positions. Fun is always the focus, but other benefits include independently playing your own part in an ensemble, learning when to play a lead or supportive role, playing syncopated rhythms, holding a good groove...AND a power pack of cellists as friends! There will be an end-of-summer performance, tba.

Tiny Fiddlers move, dance, sing, and "fiddle" on foam violin replicas ($20 one-time addtl) to lively folk songs and popular melodies. Children get a great start learning music by ear, practicing violin position and care, singing jovial songs, playing with rhythm sticks, dancing with scarves, and developing both fine and gross motor skills through eye/hand coordination games and exercises. Caregivers are encouraged to participate, helping to support the child's learning while modeling inclusion, engagement, boosting confidence, and having fun together! This is a joyous class, full of musical explorations that enrich a child's development. Tiny Fiddlers is an on-going class that many families take repeatedly!

Little Fiddlers is a beginning small group violin class rooted in folk music. Students learn the basics of violin technique and how to play simple songs through an engaging class of fiddling, rhythm sticks, singing, and music games. There is emphasis on violin posture and position to provide a solid foundation for continued success in learning. Enrollment is limited to 6 students per class. We have a small inventory of violins for rent, please inquire.

Young Fiddlers is a beginning violin class pulling from both folk and classical music. Participants may be graduates from Little Fiddlers but students often join this class with no prior lessons. We learn to play new tunes, dig deeper into violin technique, bow hold development, and building rhythm skills. The tunes are taught by ear as well as with sheet music to develop note-reading. There is emphasis on posture and position to provide a solid foundation for continued learning. Enrollment is limited to 6 students per class. We have a small inventory of violins for rent, please inquire.

Enrollment is limited to 6 students per class.

The class is relaxed, informal, and participants have commented on the enjoyment that comes from learning with other adults. It's never too late to learn a new instrument! Enrollment is limited to 6 participants.

This is an excellent introduction and/or supplement to public school strings class. Enrollment is limited to 5 students per class.

*Summer time is also adventure time, so we understand that not everyone can make an entire summer session commitment. We will adjust our policies to allow for up to one prorated group instrumental class or two prorated String Mafia/Cello Brigade class absences.  A small printing /materials fee is built into the total class cost and will not be prorated. Please communicate your schedule needs upon registering to receive the prorated cost. Missed classes after the session begins (not previously communicated) will not be prorated. Intensives cannot be prorated.
**As always, Grow Music offers classes on a sliding-scale for those whom the cost of class is prohibitive. Please inquire.
