CELTIC & SCANDI FIDDLE JAM (all strings!)

In the heat of Montana summer, spend 5 days cooling off while exploring the northern sounds of Ireland, Scotland and Norway! Haunting Irish laments, fast reels and jigs, rousing Scottish marches, and Norsk walking tunes to get those feet moving! To experience friluftsliv or the "free air life" we will be strolling over to the nearby park to practice walking and playing at the same time! This fiddle class is open to violin, viola, and cello and will involve learning tunes in an authentic jam circle. Most songs will be taught “by ear” but sheet music will also be provided so you can remember the melodies later. All instruments will get a chance to learn the tune melodies and we will orchestrate a few with harmonies and a touch of storytelling. No limit to the number of students, there’s always room in the circle for more players! This class is best for intermediate-advanced students who are comfortable sight reading, know all their note names (A, B, C, etc. & sharps/flats/natural), and can play major and minor scales. There will be an informal performance on Friday following class and we have a special (participation optional) invitation to play a short set at the Bitterroot Celtic Gathering on Sat 8/19!
STRING MAFIA (int/adv level)

Dates: Tuesdays, June 20-August 22 (9 classes, no class 7/4)
String players unite! We explore creative arrangements of pop tunes, old standards, classic hits, and anything else we feel like playing. There are parts for all string players (violin, viola, cello, bass) from intermediate to advanced levels. Fun is always the focus, but other benefits include independently playing your own part in an ensemble, learning when to play a lead or supportive role, playing syncopated rhythms, reading in other clefs (cello), using extended techniques, holding a good groove...AND you can never have enough string players as friends. Come rock your socks with us! There will be an end-of-summer performance on the evening of Tues 8/22.
CELLO BRIGADE (intermediate level)

Dates: Tuesdays, June 20-August 22 (9 classes, no class 7/4)
Cello power! Back by popular demand, the Cello Brigade is for young learners who might not yet be ready for the faster pace of String Mafia. We explore simple and creative arrangements of pop tunes and classic hits made specifically for the players involved. Participation is for intermediate level players, ie. those who can read bass clef and have explored 1-4 positions. Fun is always the focus, but other benefits include independently playing your own part in an ensemble, learning when to play a lead or supportive role, playing syncopated rhythms, holding a good groove...AND a power pack of cellists as friends! There will be an end-of-summer performance on the evening of Tues 8/22.

Tiny Fiddlers move, dance, sing, and "fiddle" on foam violin replicas ($20 one-time addtl) to lively folk songs and popular melodies. Children get a great start learning music by ear, practicing violin position and care, singing jovial songs, playing rhythm sticks, dancing with scarves, and developing fine and gross motor skills through eye/hand coordination games. Caregivers are encouraged to participate, helping to support the child's learning while modeling inclusion, engagement, play, and having fun together! This is a joyous class, full of musical exploration. Tiny Fiddlers is an on-going class that many families take repeatedly!
LITTLE FIDDLERS (age 6+)

Little Fiddlers is a beginning small group violin class rooted in folk music. Learn the basics of violin technique and how to play songs through an engaging class of fiddling, rhythm sticks, singing, and music games. There is emphasis on violin posture and position to provide a solid foundation for continued success in learning. Enrollment is limited to 6 students per class. We have a small inventory of violins for rent, please inquire.

YOUNG FIDDLERS (age 8+)

Young Fiddlers is a beginning violin class pulling from both folk and classical music. Participants may be graduates from Little Fiddlers but students also join this class with no prior lessons. We learn to play fun tunes, dig into violin technique, bow hold development, and build on rhythm skills. Tunes are taught by ear as well as with sheet music to develop note-reading. There is emphasis on posture and position to provide a solid foundation for continued learning. Enrollment is limited to 6 students per class. We have a small inventory of rental violins, please inquire.
FANTASTIC FIDDLERS (age 10+)

SESSION 2 - Mondays, July 17-August 14 (5 classes)
Fantastic Fiddlers is a violin class pulling from both folk and classical music. This class is for students who have taken the Young Fiddlers class and/or other music lessons for <1 year and are ready for a faster pace and deeper learning. Also open to aspiring 5th grade beginners who would like a head start on their musical journey! Enrollment is limited to 7 students per class.
Classes are held at the Grow Music Studio - 800 Kensington Ave, Missoula 59801
*Summer time is also adventure time, so we understand that not everyone can make an entire summer session commitment. We will adjust our policies to allow for up to one prorated group instrumental class or two prorated String Mafia/Cello Brigade class absences. A small printing /materials fee is built into the total class cost and will not be prorated. Please communicate your schedule needs upon registering to receive the prorated cost. Missed classes after the session begins (not previously communicated) will not be prorated. Intensives cannot be prorated.
