Bill Kautz received his Bachelor of Arts in Music and German Studies from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2007 and spent the 2005-06 academic year in Vienna, Austria studying music, German, and psychology. Bill also holds a Master of Education in School Counseling from Seattle Pacific University and was a School Counselor at Franklin High School in Seattle, Washington prior to arriving in Missoula.
Bill has taught instrumental music privately and has directed the Hamilton Middle School Junior Jazz 2 middle school jazz band in Seattle. He was also an active participant in the Racer Sessions improvisational music community in Seattle and recorded horn parts for bands LAKE and Desolation Wilderness on K Records and collaborated with Karl Blau.
Currently, Bill is a stay-at-home dad for his 3-year-old daughter and newborn son. He is a co-founder of The FreeSessions through Lakebottom Sound, curates a weekly radio show on KBGA called Something Else!, co-facilitates the Strange Sounds Montana concert series at Wave and Circuit, leads his 6-piece ensemble of original music called Crosstalk, and has an experimental electronic music duo with Michael Musick.
